Why does a black hole have a bright ring around it?
That light comes from hot gas and dust moving around the black hole. As the material moves inward, friction makes it extremely hot and bright.
Do black holes only pull things in?
Not exactly. Some black holes can produce huge jets of energy and particles that travel across enormous distances. The Codex explains where these jets come from and how they form.
What is the black hole in M87?
M87 has a huge black hole at its centre. In 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope gave us the first famous image of a black hole's shadow. The Codex explains what we learned from it.
